FEILE NA NGAEL - 2016

1. Feile na nGael - Corcaighe

The first steps for Cork clubs were the local Feile na nGael games with 24 teams entered in the Premier Grade (National Feile na nGael – Division 1). Initially teams were divided into 4 groups of 6 and then subdivided from that into 2 sections of 3 teams per section, with winners and runners up meeting in semi final and final to determine the group winner who qualified for the Feile na nGael (Cork) Semi Finals. All Group games were played at venues across Cork on the Saturday with the Semi Finals and Final on the Sunday evening.

Glen Rovers were in Group 4a, their opponents in the Group Stages being Valley Rovers (1-8 to 0-0) and Éire Óg (2-6 to 0-2). They then met Ballygarvan, Runners Up from Group 4b in the semi-final and had a winning score of 5-6 to 0-0 before meeting Ballincollig in the Group Final. Here they won 2-4 to Ballincollig’s 0 -1

Semi Final pairings resulted – Glen Rovers v Sarsfields and St. Finbarrs (Cork Féile na nGael winners in 2015) meeting St. Colman’s. Two very competitive games resulted with victory going to Glen Rovers by 0-7 to 1-3 against Sarsfields with a late point securing victory for the Glen. In the final they came up against their South Side rivals St. Finbarrs and here patrons were again treated to a most exciting game of hurling. It was nip and tuck all the way with victory going Glen’s way when a late St. Finbarrs free dropped shot, the ball was cleared, referee Kevin Murphy blew his final whistle to scenes of great joy from the many Glen Rovers in attendance. The ‘Dave O’Brien Trophy’ in memory of a truly great Glen Administrator was carried to Blackpool amid scenes of great celebration with the thoughts of the National Feile na nGael to follow.

Between the Saturday and Sunday some 39 games were played in the competition.

2. Under 14 County Premier 1 Hurling Championship

Thoughts of the Forthcoming National Feile na nGael weekend had to be put to one side as an under 14 Premier Hurling Championship had to be played. The opening game in the Championship saw Glen Rovers score a one point victory over Midleton on a scoreline of 15 points to 2-8. In the Semi Final the Glen overcame Ballincollig by 1-20 to 1-6, a fairly comprehensive victory. The County Final was a repeat of the 2015 decider Glen Rovers v St. Finbarrs, Barrs being the 2015 winners. They say victory follows victory and in a very keenly contested Final Glen Rovers emerged winners by 1-11 to St. Finbarrs 1-5.

3. Feile na nGael Finals weekend at Tipperary

In the National Feile na nGael Finals weekend Glen Rovers were hosted by the Kilruane McDonaghs Club based in North Tipperary at Cloughjordan. Games schedule being 2 games on the Friday evening, a game on Saturday Morning with Cup and/or Shield, depending on your finishing position, Quarter Finals and semi-finals on Saturday afternoon. The Finals were scheduled for Sunday Morning, the Cup Final at Leahy Park Cashel and the Shield Final at the Carriganore WIT Complex Pitch Waterford.

The opening encounter on the Friday afternoon saw the Glen off to a good start when defeating Toomevara. In the second game they met Faythe Harriers, Wexford Champions and here suffered defeat. This meant that a win in the game versus Kilruane McDonaghs on the Saturday Morning was necessary for the Glen to retain interest in the Cup competition. This was achieved and so it was onto Nenagh for a Quarter Final meeting with the Kilkenny Champions, City Based side Dicksboro. This was a thrilling game that ended level at the end of normal time, extra time failed to separate the sides and so each team had 5 free pucks, with points only to count, to be taken by different players from the 45 metre line. Again they could not be separated, and so sudden death followed, Glen Rovers player pointed with the Dicksboro player failing and amid scenes of great joy the journey continued to a Semi Final game at Dr. Morris Park with Lucan Sarsfields, Dublin Champions providing the opposition with Glen rovers rising to the occasion and winning by a 4 point margin. Thus at the end of the evening in a day that commenced at 10.30 am and now 3 games and some 9 hours later the Cork Champions were in the Final on the Sunday Morning at Leahy Park Cashel with Faythe Harriers, Wexford the opposition. Unfortunately for Glen Rovers, and just like their group game on the Friday evening, Faythe Harriers again proved too strong winning on a scoreline of Faythe Harriers 2-3 to Glen Rovers 0-2

The wait for a sixth title for Glen Rovers to accompany those of 1975 and 1976 when the competition was held in Cork, 1979 in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, 1982 in Croke Park, and 2002 in Casement Park, Belfast.

All in all a weekend to be cherished where many friendships were made, and the great games of Hurling won out. Mile Buiochas Buachaillí Fanuithe an Gleanna.
