KILMURRY SUCCESS AT UNDERAGE
Success at underage has been great for Kilmurry GAA over the years, particularly in 2015. Winning over seven titles in one year is some achievement, namely U15B County Championship, U16A County Championship, U16A County League Title, U16A East League Title, Minor A County League Title, Minor A East Championship and Minor A East League Title. The Club are grateful to the parents and trainers of Kilmurry GAA. Without the hard work, and commitment from the input into the parents from bringing players to trainings, games and other club activities none of the above successes would have been achieved. The club also thank the supporters for their continued support. There is a great underage structure in place in Kilmurry GAA and a great number underage coaches in the club. Yet again the Club would like to thank Managers and Selectors for their continued work and dedication.
Quotes from Coach, Captains and Kilmurry Club Chairman
Kilmurry GAA Chairman Jim Murphy:
"It has been my first year in charge, it was great to see great success at underage level. I look forward to carrying this success into adult level in years to come."
Minor Selector Michael Linehan:
“Excellent year for the club, there is a great talent pool at these age groups, and hopefully this can be brought through to Junior A grade for future success for the club. A great bunch of lads to work with, they put in the work, and they got their just reward."
Under 16 Manager Barry Fitton:
“It was great to lead such a committed bunch of players. They have a fantastic energy and never-say-die attitude, which was evident throughout 2015."
Greg Fitton, Under 16 Captain:
“It was great to captain this team to a County Final; there are many leaders throughout the field, and it was a privilege to captain this Kilmurry team."
Marco Healy, Minor Captain:
“A great team that never laid down and kept going even when things didn't look good."
KILMURRY GAA CLUB HISTORY
The Kilmurry GAA club has a long and proud tradition dating back to 1875, which makes it one of the oldest clubs in the country. At that time the game was known as "rough and tumble". The chief opposition in those days came from the adjacent parishes of Kilmichael, Aglish, Murragh and Clondrohid. Michael Cusack then founded the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884 at Hayes Hotel in Thurles and soon afterwards Kilmurry were to affiliate to that organisation.
Kilmurry representing the whole of the parish in these times were able to enter two teams in the Senior Championship and made an immediate impact on the football field around the 1890's. In 1890 they contested the County semi-final against Midleton at the Polo grounds Ballincollig. Many unprejudiced spectators on that day, felt that Kilmurry were unlucky losers as a goal with a minute to go was disallowed. Midleton then defeated Dromtariffe in the county final and later went on to win the All-Ireland. Two years later Kilmurry avenged their defeat by Midleton in the Semi-final but lost to Clondrohid in the final.
Mid Cork Junior Titles were achieved in 1978, 1980, 1984 and 1986 as well as 1980 and 1986 County Junior Titles. Following this victory Kilmurry went up the Intermediate ranks. The official opening of Pairc Sheain Mhic Ghearailt was in 1991, with the new playing fields and dressing rooms named after one of the Club's stalwarts. County Board Chairman Tony O'Mahony cut the tape on a project that took many years and much effort to achieve. It was fitting that the year's end saw Kilmurry’s Junior Bs win their first Mid-Cork Championship, beating Ballinora in the final. They added the League Title for good measure.
The years 1992-1995 saw the Club on a roller coaster ride of emotions as it competed in two County Intermediate Championship Finals, beaten narrowly in 1992 by Mallow by 1 point, and in 1995 by the Dohenys in another year of heartbreak for the Club. If the Billy Long Cup eluded Kilmurry, they achieved a small measure of consolation, winning two Intermediate League Titles in 1990 and 1994.
The 1990's also saw the Club win the Muskerry Cup for the first time in 1992 and an Under-21 title in 1993. Our Minor team won the B Championship and League in 1995, and their own Divisional League in 1997 the Non-Exam League in 1998, and the Minor A Championship in 1999 with a tremendous victory over Grenagh. The decade ended as it began, with a Junior B Championship and League double.
In 2012 after a 26 year wait, Kilmurry captured the Mid-Cork title. However, they were beaten by Rockchapel in the County Final after a replay. In 2014 Kilmurry captured the Mid Cork title, but were beaten by Millstreet in the County Semi Final.
