2015 – WHAT A YEAR FOR BUTTEVANT UNDERAGE SECTION!

Starting off in 2015, Buttevant had hopes of competing well in several competitions with victory in a few a possibility. Since the start of this decade the Club had taken a number of North Region titles but their only county success in 4 finals was the Under 13 annexing the Under 13 Football Title in 2011.

As a dual Club since their inception in the early 80s, there were 58 players playing in 10 teams in Hurling and Football from Under 13 to Minor in the Rebel OG North Region in 2015. The Club has a strong under age profile and kids as young as six are catered for by coaches who are learning their trade and earning their coaching badges along the way.

The year went well for us and the momentum was initially generated by our Under 14 footballers who qualified for the quarter finals in the Feile , only to bow out against St.Finbarrs.

This potential of this team was fully realised as they went on to win the North Region double of League and Championship and last July they took their first A County Title in Ballinlough. We thought it couldn’t get better, but the momentum was only gathering pace.

The majority of these young players were part of the Under 15 and 16 Teams that won Under 15 County Titles in Football and Hurling and the Under 16 Football Championship in the North Region.

The older boys in these squads were in turn part of the Minor Football team who had progressed from an average ‘B’ Grade team at under 14 to winning the County ‘A’ Cup in four years. Having 3 players involved with the Cork Minor Panel indicates just how much progress has been made in the club.

The Under 13 hurlers showed their prowess with the small ball with their victory in the North Region. Hurling is a very important part of the Buttevant Club and all teams including 14s, 16s and Minors participated in all competitions and acquitted themselves with some stirring displays.

The Club has often discussed how all this success happened; how having played 34 Championship or League knock-out games with 10 teams, we managed to come out on the right side of the score line on 27 occasions.

Clearly having only 58 players and hurling/football coaches who were in involved in 2 if not 3 teams, with similar approaches in playing style helped enormously, as players knew exactly what was expected of them no matter what team they were playing on.

We were helped in other key areas by participation in County and Regional Squads, by the scheduling of games by both the fixtures secretaries in Rebel Óg North and at County level and by having little or no injuries to key players.

The understanding of parents was always vital and the club received great support from their followers.

Nine Trophies including four County Titles won in a single year by 58 players . A level of success that probably will never be repeated again in our Club.

Quote from Seamus Madigan (Minor Football Captain) on winning the county final.

“These players are my brothers and we have been together since we were six.

To win a County Title is a dream come true. Our trainers believed in us from the start of the year and we worked hard to achieve this, but to have this moment surrounded by our family and friends is unbelievable.”

Quote from Tadhg Donovan (Club Chairman in 2015) at our Victory Social

“Great credit is due to all the trainers in our Club. The work well with each other and our players are valued from the moment they arrive to the time they join the Adult Club.

Before you on the table are nine trophies, testament to the players’ abilities but our Club, whether we win or not, does its utmost to make each member feel welcome and enjoy their experience.”

Quote from Derry O’Gorman (Team Mentor)

“Self-esteem is something that is precious for children to develop in the teenage years and playing our games in the right spirit, respecting their team mates and opponents help them to be responsible adults and enjoy life. This year’s players have had an unforgettable experience and their confidence is sky high. This can only lead to greater things for Buttevant GAA.”
